Pregnancy-Safe Beauty Swaps
Pregnancy doesn't always give moms-to-be that coveted glow. In fact, with my first pregnancy, my skin was dull, my hair was limp, and I had stretch marks galore. So far with Baby #2, I've had so many breakouts, waking up everyday to find a new pimple. My hair is greasy and dry at the same time - the kind of hair that looks fine in photos but in person... Oof. I certainly don't have the glow, but I found some skincare products that help.
With warmer weather officially here for the summer, I understand how changing hormones mixed with heat and sweat can affect my skin and hair, so I rounded a few pregnancy-safe beauty product swaps that will get me through the summer and all the way to my due date.
Face Cleanser
Admittedly, I've never had a solid skin care routine. Mostly because I've always had really clear skin (knock on wood!) and my skin is generally very even with a good tone. However. During pregnancy, my skin can go from oily to dry in a heartbeat, I get insane breakouts, and my skin gets blotchy. So I knew it was time to find a good daily cleanser that was both gentle and hardcore. That's when I found Trufora. Their products are all pure, effective, and free from any irritants. I love the way my skin feels after I wash my face with the Ultimate Facial Cleanser and once a week, I use the Triple Action Exfoliant to buff out any imperfections (it works wonders with the blotchiness and dry patches of skin).
Face Masks
Recently, I was introduced to YesTo by a girlfriend and I've been hooked ever since. What I didn't know is that all their products are 95% all natural ingredients and they're very upfront and honest about their skincare recipes for their masks, peels, and oils. They use ingredients like grapefruit, blueberries, tomatoes, and carrots in their products and rely the natural benefits fruits and vegetables have for your skin. So far, my favorites have been the Tomato Detoxifying Charcoal Mud Mask and all the Grapefruit products that target dull and uneven skin. But I got to preview some of the new YesTo products that are launching soon and let me tell you... the Energizing Coffee Mud Mask has got me all kinds of excited!
Sunscreen
During pregnancy, your skin is way more sensitive to sun and that means it can burn more easily, or get darker (if you tan easily). But tanning shouldn't be your priority while you are pregnant... No matter how much time I'm spending outside, I'm wearing Hawaiian Tropic Hydration Sunscreen . It's non-greasy and doesn't contain Oxybenzone - one of the 3 ingredients that blocks UV rays, and one of the ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. It smells amazing, is lightweight, but provides amazing protection and hydrates my skin all at the same time.
Makeup
During the summer, I don't want to wear a lot of makeup, and I don't have time to put on a ton of makeup. SO I stick with my favorites, which also happen to be free from chemicals, ingredients that cause inflammation, and are pregnancy-friendly. As a base, I use CoverFx illuminating primer. It adds just the right amount of glow without making my face look oily. I pair that with the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer for sheer, lightweight coverage with built in SPF. From there, my routine is so simple. I use the Urban Decay Flushed Contour Palette (not to contour...) for a little definition on my cheekbones but mostly because I adore the highlighter. It's subtle with the perfect amount of sheen and sparkle. I top off my look with Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. I love how long and luscious it makes my lashes look (and makes me look more awake than I really am!) with little effort.
Lip Color
Lipstick is one of the makeup products that actually gets inside your body (it's unavoidable when you eat or drinks!) and while it's not ever enough to be toxic, that also means you are most likely digesting TINY trace amounts of lead (even the FDA has said the lead in lipstick is not harmful). But... for the next 6 months, I think I'll play it safe! Depending on the day and occasion, I have a few go-to lip colors that are all pregnancy-friendly. For my everyday look, the Burts Bees Tinted Lip Balm saves the day. There's a hint of color with a TON of moisture and hydration. For a daily work look, my favorite go-to chemical-free, paraben-free, lip-plumping gloss by Buxom in Sophia. When I want lip color and I want it to last, I use Milani Color Statement Matte Lipstick. My girlfriend introduced me to the brand last fall, and I've been hooked ever since. Not only is is crazy affordable (i.e. CHEAP!), but it's vegan, natural, and has a lot of MAC Dupe shades!
I am not a beauty expert by any means, but was fortunate enough to find brands that I love, that are also non-toxic and pregnancy friendly!
What are some beauty products you discovered that are safe for mamas-to-be? I'd love to hear!
